CSM VIRGIL R. WILLIAMS SCHOLARSHIP


SOUTH DAKOTA NATIONAL GUARD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (CORNING/MALLOW)

This scholarship endowment is made possible by donations from the National Guard Officers and Enlisted Associations and is established in memory of  Major General Duane L. "Duke" Corning's love and dedication for these associations and for his fidelity, dedication and unselfish service to his state, nation, and fellowman. The purpose of the memorial endowment is to encourage active/retired members of the South Dakota National Guard (Army and Air) and their dependents to pursue degrees in higher education at an accredited institution of their choice. CW2 Darren R Mallow Memorial Scholarship is awarded by Col (Ret) Bob and Shirley Mallow of Black Hawk, SD in remembrance of their son Darren who was an outstanding guard member whose life was cut tragically short by a fatal civilian helicopter accident in the summer of 1999. Two $1000 scholarships will be awarded by the Enlisted/Officer Associations and one $100.00 scholarship offered by the Mallow family. Judges will select the winners as first, second, and third place, with third place being the $100.00 scholarship.

Minimum Qualifications:  To be considered for this award, an applicant must be:  1)  A current/retired member or a dependent of a current/retired member of the South Dakota National Guard Officer or Enlisted Associations.  2)  A graduating high school senior and/or an individual enrolled or having intent to enroll in a post-secondary institution (undergraduate study only) on a full-time basis.

Application Procedures:  To apply for the South Dakota National Guard Memorial Scholarship, applicants must submit the following in its entirety by April 1st.

     1.  The South Dakota National Guard Memorial scholarship application form.

     2.  At least one letter of academic recommendation.  Should be from a teacher, counselor, dean or professor addressing the applicant's academic achievements.

     3.  At least one letter of personal recommendation.  Should be from a community leader, minister, elected official, or unit commander (if member of National Guard) addressing the applicant's moral and personal traits, character and leadership abilities (cannot be a parent).

     4.  An official high school and/or college transcript which indicates the applicant's cumulative grade point average and one copy of the applicant's latest SAT/ACT test scores, if applicable.

Application Due Date:  All application packages must be submitted by April 1st to:  South Dakota National Guard Memorial Scholarship, Attention:  John Mimmack, 801 West National Guard Drive, Sioux Falls, SD, 57104.  NOTE:  Complete packages must be received or they will be returned to the applicant.  For example:  Do not have the official transcript or the letters of recommendation sent directly to John Mimmack.  Your entire package must be sent under one cover.

USAA SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship endowment is made possible by the USAA insurance program.   The purpose of the USAA scholarship is to encourage active enlisted members of the South Dakota National Guard (Army and Air) and their dependents to pursue degrees in higher education at an accredited institution of their choice.  This objective is to be accomplished through annual award of the USAA scholarship. 

Minimum Qualifications:  To be considered for this award, an applicant must be:  1)  A current member or a dependent of a member of the South Dakota National Guard Enlisted Association.  2)   A graduating high school senior and/or an individual enrolled or having intent to enroll in a post-secondary institution (undergraduate study only) on a full-time basis.

Application Procedures.  To apply for the USAA scholarship, applicants must submit the following, in its entirety, by April 1st.

     1.  The USAA scholarship application form.

     2.  At least one letter of academic recommendation.  Should be from a teacher, counselor, dean or professor addressing the applicant's academic achievements.

CSM VIRGIL R. WILLIAMS SCHOLARSHIP

The Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States has established a CSM Virgil R. Williams scholarship program.  The following persons are eligible:  1)   Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States members, 2)   dependent unmarried sons and daughters of the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States members, 3)  spouses of Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States members, and 4)  unmarried spouses and unmarried dependent sons and daughters of deceased Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States members who were in good standing at the time of their death.  Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States member applicants, parent or guardian of unmarried sons and daughters who are applicants and members whose spouse is an applicant must have at least one (1) year remaining on his/her enlistment following completion of the school year for which application is submitted, or have served 20 or more years in service.  There will be two (2) or more scholarships awarded each year.   Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $2,000.00 for the current school year of applications, and applicants must be enrolled as full-time students at a college, university, trade or business school.  Graduate students are not eligible for scholarships.

Application Procedures.  All applications will be accompanied by:

     1.  The CSM Virgil R. Williams scholarship application form.

     2.  A transcript of high school credits and a transcript of college credits for applicants already in institutions of higher learning.

     3.  A letter from applicant with personal, specific facts as to his/her desire to continue his/her education and why financial assistance is required.

     4.  Three (3) letters of recommendation verifying the application and giving specific moral and personal traits.  These may be from community leaders, ministers, educators, etc.

     5.  One (1) letter of academic reference (should be from principal, counselor, dean or professor).

     6.  Photo copy of state and/or national membership card (parent, spouse or yours, if you are a member).

Application Due Date.  All scholarship applications will be sent to the scholarship chairman of his/her respective state or that person so designated by his/her State President.  Each application will be reviewed for completeness and approved by the respective state.  Applications must include all of the required materials.  Application packages must be submitted by June 1st to:  CSM Virgil R.
